Why His Health Matters Before Conception

When a couple starts preparing for pregnancy, most of the attention goes to her: the prenatal, the cycle tracking, the lab work. His health often doesn't come up at all. But a baby starts with two cells, and one of them is his.

Fertility is a shared story

Male factors play a role in roughly half of the fertility challenges couples face. Nobody is to blame for that. It's simply a good reason to prepare as a team, with both partners taking care of their health before you start trying.

Sperm are made months in advance

Sperm take about three months to develop. The food, sleep, stress and habits a man has this season shape the sperm that will be there next season. That's why preconception care for men is worth starting early, ideally around three months before you begin trying.

What supports his health before conception

  • Eat real food. Vegetables, fruit, quality protein and healthy fats provide zinc, selenium, folate and antioxidants, nutrients that play a part in healthy sperm formation.

  • Keep things cool. Sperm production works best a little below body temperature, so long hot tubs, saunas and a laptop on the lap are worth cutting back.

  • Go easy on alcohol, and skip smoking. Both can affect sperm quality, and the months before trying are a good time to reset.

  • Move, sleep and manage stress. Regular exercise, good sleep and real rest all support healthy hormones.

  • Get checked. A visit with your doctor and basic labs give you real information instead of guesses, and a clear starting point.

Where a men's multi fits

Food comes first, but many men fall short on key nutrients. We formulated the FIG Men's Multi with fertility support for men preparing for fatherhood. It includes zinc and selenium to support healthy spermatogenesis and reproductive function, folate and B12 to support healthy sperm formation and DNA synthesis, CoQ10 and vitamin E for antioxidant support, and L-carnitine to support sperm energy metabolism and motility.* It's iron-free, and it pairs with her prenatal in our His & Hers Bundle so you can build the routine together.

Preparing together

Preconception isn't only her job. When both partners take care of their health, you walk into pregnancy as a team. Pick one change to start this week and build from there.
